Prevention
and

Eradication of American foulbrood

out of reach and out of sight  with

F.I.B.K.A. Policy on American Foulbrood

 (1) Make sure...
 (2) Inspect...
 (3) Never transfer...
 (4) Never bring...
 (5) Never buy...
 (6) Control...
 (7) If a colony...
 (8) If any ...

 (9) Be suspicious of stray swarms, hive         them on foundation rather than
drawn comb. Do not feed for three
     days
. Inspect them for disease once
     they have become established.

(10) Regularly...
(11) Any...

(12) If confirmed...
                                                           (13) Pour a half litre of petrol through the
       feed hole
in the crown board to
smother the bees. Ensure OMF is
closed. All bees are dead in minutes.
Thoroughly test all other hives in
       the apiary for Foul Brood.

(14) Dig a hole in the ground and burn
the contents of the hive: dead bees
brood box and floor, frames, combs
       and honey
plus supers on the
       infected colony.

FOOD   FOR   THOUGHT

Shanvaus Apiary
(20 years of beekeeping - approx. 400  swarms)
American Foulbrood?
COMMENTS:

(9)Good old ‘Auntie Fibka’ must have heard some
rumours but this is still the traditional method of
     hiving a swarm. “Donotfeedforthreedays!” alone
will not have the desired effect on A. Foulbrood.
It needs three days -------- 72 hours in the dark!

(12)Confirmation will  come  from  your  friendly
Bee Diagnostic Service and you should know:
American  Foulbrood is a notifiable disease!

(13)This means someone else will visit you and pour          half a litre of petrol through the feedhole!

You don’t have to thoroughly test all other hives
       in the apiary for Foulbrood.
Your ‘someone else’ visitor will pour more half
litres of petrol through the feedholes...

(14)Money can buy you new beekeeping equipment.
A source for new hives can be found on this
       web site: BusyBeeWoodworks’, our newcomer!
But we live in Ireland and Ireland today is a very
special part of  the world. The question now is:
Where will money be able to buy you new bees?

(16)You should..: get in touch with: Shanvaus Apiary!
