Irish Beekeeping & Bee Parasites

WE BELIEVE TO PROBABLY HAVE FOUND AN ‘ALTERNATIVE’ METHOD SUITABLE FOR THE MONITORING OF VARROA MITE PRESENCE IN HONEY BEE COLONIES SETTLED IN BEE HIVES ON SOLID FLOOR BOARDS WHEN WE KEPT SAMPLES OF 20 WORKER BEES IN THE DEEP FREEZER FOR SEQUENTIAL TESTING OF ACARINE (TRACHEAL MITES) WE FREQUENTLY NOTICED DEAD VARROA MITES IN THE CONTAINERS WITH THE FROZEN SAMPLES. AN INSPECTION OF THE BEES BEFORE THEY WHERE MOUNTED ON THE CORK FOR DISSECTION REVEALED THAT VARROA MITES TRAVEL ON THEIR HONEY BEE HOST IN MORE THAN ONE WAY !

IN LECTURES ALMOST ALWAYS THE VARROA MITE IS EXPLAINED TO BE FOUND ON THE LARVAE WITHIN THE CAPPED CELL OR RIDING ON THE BACK OF THE ADULT WORKER BEE OR DRONE.

IT’S SIMPLE - HOLD THE BEE UP TO THE LIGHT AND HAVE A LOOK AT THE ABDOMEN FROM BELOW, MITES WILL ALWAYS BE VISIBLE (IF PRESENT!)  AS SHOWN IN THE PICTURES BELOW...

ONE OR TWO VARROA MITES FOUND THIS WAY IN A SAMPLE OF 20-24 BEES MEANS THAT YOUR LAST VARROA TREATMENT WAS EITHER NOT VERY EFFECTIVE OR CAME MUCH TOO LATE. THE COLONY HAS A VARROA PROBLEM - TREAT IMMEDIATELY!

Well known!
